S60 and Series 40 are i “software platforms” for mobile phones that uses Symbian OS. they are kind of “programming foundations” upon which the desktop of a phone is made. like DOS is for WINDOWS??…the core. the software face of a phone. it helps you manage the resources of your phone…

We often find the phrases like “User interface: S60 user interface 2nd Edition” or “User interface: Series 40 user interface 3rd Edition” while browsing through several phone specifications.
What do they mean?…whats user interface?…whats this s60 and series 40?… does it necessarily matter which one i choose??…
User interface: Nowadays the new phones coming in the market are getting more sophisticated day by day. in this continuos process there comes a need of an “operating system” for such phones. they are mini computers or otherwise known as “smart phones”. instead of the desktops in our PC (or MACs) we have a “user interface” here. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT. it depends on the user interface which you choose that you can create folders or not, whether you can move or reposition them or not. IT DIRECTLY INTERACTS WITH YOU AND HENCE DECIDES WHETHER A PHONE IS USER-FRIENDLY OR NOT. S40 and S60 user interfaces are as follows:
S60 USER INTERFACE
S60 FEATURES:
-
ebables you to install 3rd party applications.
-
Multitasking: allows you to run many applications together, eg. you can run athe camera, music player, calender and call together.
-
move the folders here and there and can copy or create them.
-
makes your phone a SMART PHONE.
-
web pages seem as they are. no major changes.
-
applications running in the background.
-
flexible.
S40 features:
-
user interface less complicated, more readable.
-
cannot install 3rd party applications but can install basic .jars (basic java based applications).
-
no real media player
-
no multitasking.
-
cannot run applications in background. You cannot run a camera and music player together.
-
works faster then S60. looks a bit bright.
-
you cannot create new folders through the user interface.
-
not much flexible.
Although S40 looks a bit better, but S60 3rd edition is a good competitor looks wise. S40 does not actually make your phone a SMART PHONE! it becomes a bit far from your computer-kinda-flexibility. you cannot install the 3rd partyu applications on your phone with S40 but just basic java applications. theres no real media player with S40 which makes it more memory consuming and less user friendly. worst part is that S40 based phones cannot support multitasking. theres no good reason why somebody would like his phones music player to pause when he/she is clicking a snap! But a S40 phone is faster, Slimmer (usually) and less sophisticated.
FOR A BASIC AND AVERAGE PHONE USER, s40 IS APPROPRIATE, BUT IF YOU ARE A PHONE LOVER OR ENTHUSIAST OR A COOL CRITIC, THEN GO FOR A SMART S60.
